Practical tips

Compared to other popular road trips in France, the Bordeaux region is not necessarily the most convenient one to embark on. You will need to do a 6-hour drive from Paris in order to reach Bordeaux. That's why some holiday makers prefer taking the TGV train from Paris Montparnasse station to Bordeaux and start their self-drive tour there.

Nevertheless, if you're courageous enough and wish to explore other sides of France, renting a car and driving down from Paris will allow you to witness the beauty of the castles in the Loire Valley, charming small towns or villages, or the countryside of the Dordogne river, for example.

For a family-friendly journey where you can do small stops and taking turns on the right-driving French roads, you should take non-motorway roads.

What to do if you have...

1 Day: Enjoy Bordeaux city as much as you can!

2 Days: Not only should you admire the beauty of the vineyards in Bordeaux and do some wine-tastings, but also go to smaller wine production towns and talk to the local producers

3 Days: Go further to the seaside towns and see the spectacular sand dunes

If you're in Bordeaux, one of the most important things that you must do is about wine! Visit the well established wine museum called "Cité du vin" to understand this amazing wine country better! Also, if you get there around early summer, there's a great event for a wine Marathon around the area: a one-of-a-kind experience!

Where to go next?

If you fancy a refreshing beach holiday after your fulfilling road trip around the Bordeaux area, you should head down to the South for some Atlantic beaches, like Biarritz. Located along the Atlantic coast, this is one of the best places to surf in France. Experience the cultural shock from the very proud people from the Pays Basque

Driving down to Carcassonne in the Languedoc region will guarantee you a nice time discovering the beauty of this historic fortified city. Get soaked in the medieval vibe and be stunned by its architecture!
